Online Quran Classes in Sweden and the Nordics
Families in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland can have regular Quran lessons at home with a qualified teacher, however far they live from the nearest mosque. Noor Elbayan Academy teaches live one-to-one 30-minute lessons on Zoom or Google Meet, in English, Arabic or French, for children from age 6 and for adults. The time difference with Cairo is at most one hour, which makes scheduling unusually simple, and the Nordic seasons themselves suggest when to study.
Far from a teacher, close to a screen
Muslim families in the Nordic countries are often scattered. In the capitals and larger cities there are mosques with children’s classes, but in smaller towns, and across the long distances of the north, the nearest class can be hours away. Winter roads do not make the journey easier.
Online lessons close that gap. Your child meets the same teacher several times a week without leaving the house, reads aloud for the whole lesson, and is corrected individually. After each lesson you receive a written report describing what was covered and what to practise. Teachers are Azhari graduates with more than ten years of experience who hold an Ijazah with a connected Sanad, and female teachers are available for girls and women.
A small time gap with Cairo
Sweden, Norway and Denmark are normally one hour behind Cairo. Finland is normally on the same time as Cairo. Lesson times therefore feel almost local.
| Your local time | Cairo time from Sweden, Norway, Denmark | Cairo time from Finland | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.30pm | 4.30pm | 3.30pm | Younger children after school |
| 5.00pm | 6.00pm | 5.00pm | Children coming home from after-school care |
| 7.00pm | 8.00pm | 7.00pm | Teenagers and adults |
| Saturday 10.00am | 11.00am | 10.00am | Families with busy weekdays |
These times are indicative. The Nordic countries change their clocks at the end of March and the end of October, while Egypt moves forward in late April and back in late October. For about a month in spring and a few days in autumn the gap shifts by an hour: Sweden, Norway and Denmark share Cairo’s time, and Finland is an hour ahead. Confirm your slot with the academy at each change.
Dark winter afternoons: a natural time to learn
From November to February it is dark by mid-afternoon across much of the region, and earlier still in the north. Children come home, outdoor play is short, and the evening is long. This is the easiest season of the year in which to build a habit.
- Fix the lesson straight after the after-school snack. A set place in the routine means no daily negotiation.
- Use the season for new material. Winter is the time to move forward in the reading book or to memorise new surahs.
- Keep it cosy. A warm, well-lit corner and a regular seat make the lesson something to look forward to.
- Add a third weekly lesson for the darkest months if the family timetable allows.
A sample winter week
- Monday, 4.00pm: lesson. New reading.
- Wednesday, 4.00pm: lesson. Revision and the next step.
- Friday, 4.00pm: lesson. Review of the week.
- Tuesday and Thursday: five to ten minutes of practice before dinner.
Bright summer evenings and shifting prayer times
Summer reverses everything. The sun barely sets, children are outdoors until late, and prayer times move a long way across the year: Maghrib and Isha fall very late in midsummer and very early in midwinter. A timetable tied to “after Maghrib” cannot hold in the Nordics, so it is better to fix lessons by the clock and adjust twice a year.
- Switch to mornings in summer. A lesson at 9.30am or 10.00am is done before the day’s outing begins.
- Plan for the long holiday. Summer breaks in the Nordic countries are long, often from June into August, with dates that differ by country and municipality. Two lessons a week prevent a beginner from forgetting the year’s work.
- Take lessons with you. At the summer cottage or visiting family abroad, a tablet and a reasonable connection are enough.
- Cancel in good time when you are offline. A lesson cancelled at least six hours ahead is made up.
- Review the timetable in August and in March, when school, daylight and prayer times all change at once.
Questions about how to pray or fast where the days are extremely long or short should go to a qualified scholar or your local mosque; a Quran teacher’s role is recitation, reading and memorisation.
English-medium lessons for children schooled in a Nordic language
A child who is taught all day in Swedish, Norwegian, Danish or Finnish may speak yet another language at home. Lessons at the academy are not offered in the Nordic languages, but children in this region generally learn English at school from an early age, and many families use it at home as well. Teachers keep their English simple and concrete, and a great deal of early teaching is demonstration: listen, repeat, point, read.
If Arabic or French is spoken in your home, either can be used instead. Most beginners start with the Noor Al-Bayan and Qaida reading track, and families who want their children to understand more of what they read often add the Arabic for kids track later on.
Fees and how to start
Fees are stated in US dollars, from $40 per month. The amount in kronor, kroner or euro depends on the exchange rate on the day you pay and on your bank’s terms. The first lesson is a free trial, and a 7-day money-back guarantee applies after enrolment.
Frequently asked questions
My seven-year-old’s English is limited. Will lessons still work?
In most cases, yes. Early reading lessons rely on listening and repeating, and the trial lesson will show quickly whether your child follows comfortably. A parent sitting nearby can help in the first weeks.
We live in Finland. Is the time difference a problem?
No. Finland and Egypt are on the same time for most of the year, with an hour’s difference for a few weeks around the clock changes.
Can adults join too?
Yes. The academy teaches adults in reading, Tajweed, memorisation and Arabic for non-native speakers.
Can my daughter have a female teacher?
Yes. Female teachers are available for girls and women on request.
